Visit in Rudesheim and the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments

This is the working mechanism of one of the very large musical instruments. This piece was at least 8 feet by 10 feet in size.  If I had thought about it, I would have placed a person in the photo so you had a reference point. Many pieces were huge.

This large one was found in a barn and restored. With nothing to compare it to in the photo, you could hardly imagine that this was some 10-12 feet across and nearly that tall.

This was the ceiling of the 15 th Century home where the collection was housed.

This is the sheet music from which they program the paper

roll that ultimately makes the music.

This instrument punches the holes in the paper which makes the music. ( like the really old punch cards and the early computers.). Look just below the wooden bar and you can see the tiny pins that punch the holes.

This collection is housed in a 15th century home. Numerous ones of these were found in barns and totally restored. I can only imagine discovering one of these treasures, no matter what the condition. Our guide played many, many of them for us. There are very few people left in the world who can repair/restore these century old musical instruments.
