Beautiful Wachau Valley

While this area of the Danube is only about 30 Miles long, it is one of the most beautiful in all of Europe.

Hillside after hillside is all planted with grape vines.
This region produces only about 3% of all of Austria's wines.
There are also many apricot orchards. This apricot is called
the Marille.  Countless products in the region use these distinctly
flavorful fruits in pastries, jams and the famous. Sachertorte.

These vines are mostly planted  in horizontal rows....different from
those we saw on the Rhine that were mostly verticle.  Each
region has determined which way produces the best crop
for their region.

We sail past one castle after another, some in ruins,
others repurposed as in this church built on the foundation
of an old fortress castle.
